A very large soundbar, I mean "entertainment center"

Mon, 07 Apr 2025 00:00:00 +0900

I designed the entertainment center for our new living room and hired a local workshop to build it.

Naturally, I spent a completely reasonable amount of time on it.

Design

I used Sketchup to build different ideas and Twinmotion for visualization, as I did with the house itself.

We started with an open design idea. I think it was from the architect.

A roof with a view

I love panoramic views into the distance. Cities, oceans, mountains, whatever. So when we were just starting to design our house, I wanted a roof balcony with a nice view.

Tokyo is pretty crowded, and there are tall houses on two sides of our lot. Naturally, I wanted to simulate how the view would look from the expensive roof balcony we were considering.

My first idea was to send a drone up to the correct height and photograph it, but that was difficult for a number of reasons, including the fact that I don’t have a drone that could do it.

Books

“I cannot remember the books I’ve read any more than the meals I have eaten; even so, they have made me.”

A nice bit of truth from Ralph Waldo Emerson, but unfortunate when trying to write a list of recommended books. I’ll do my best.

I’ll limit myself to non-fiction here; if you read fiction you already know about Tolkien.

I read a lot of books the traditional way, but I’m also a big fan of audiobooks. I don’t make much of a distinction but will note it when relevant.
